The nominations are in and the finalists have been officially selected for the 2013 Canadian Videogame Awards. This year, the fifth for the relatively young award ceremony, is quite a bit different. Reboot Communications and EP Media are moving the show this year from Vancouver FanExpo, where it's traditionally been held, to Toronto but recently delayed the production to the fall where the 2013 awards will be announced alongside (but separately from) the 2014 awards as w
Made it through the Humid season? Welcome to the Lush season , full of brambles, hay fever, and sneezing. You'll definitely need a way to cut a path through all of the new plant life, and a way to deal with the hay fever would come in handy, too. Every time you sneeze your sanity goes down, and you might drop some items, as well. Wearing a gas mask will stop the sneezing, though the gas mask lowers your sanity, as w
Proteus came out way back in January and thus, has probably been forgotten by some as one of the best experiential games of the year. This game is the most, for want of a better word, 'arty' on this list and it's another example of a game that has come under fire for 'not being a game'. But if you can open your mind enough, Proteus is one of the best audio/visual experiments we've seen in a long t
God games are a genre that slowly died out over the last decade or so, but it was a genre defined by games like Black and White and Populus . It's hard to find a good experience of late that allows you to control your earth and your population. If you long for such power once again, Reus is something you should consider giving a wh
Well, there can be a steep cost for your thievery. The moment you grab something that doesn't belong to you, the Pig Guard that spends day and night protecting the goods will make it their life mission to ensure they pry back what you stole from your cold, dead hands. And believe me; they don't have a short mem
While you'll certainly still need to craft armor and weapons, you don't need to worry about it right off that bat. Pretty soon into the game, you'll be attacked by a couple of Vampire Bats , basically the equivalent of the Hounds in the vanilla game. They might seem formidable, but you really don't need to deal with them much at all, provided you're near the Hamlet. Run right over to some of the Pig Guards, and they'll take care of those Vampire Bats for you. Just be sure not to accidentally hit one of the guards; they don't seem to take that very w
Meandering around on your first day grabbing food, flowers, and sticks is always vital in Don't Starve , but make sure you keep moving; the sooner you find the Hamlet, the better. There are light sources in the town that you can huddle around at night, saving you from having to build a fire right off the bat. When you do build a fire, I'd recommend doing so out of the Pig Guards sight; while they're friendly (provided you don't break any Pig Laws), they will scramble to put out your fire the moment they see
The 2013 finalists for the Canadian Videogame Awards span seventeen categories and include 29 games, narrowed down from 75 nominated titles. To qualify titles, at least in part, must be developed in Canada. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag leads the pack this year with an impressive 12 nominations. Last year's show saw Far Cry 3 take him the most awards , including Game of The Y
Working as a border control officer of the glorious communist state of Arstotzka, your job is to approve the passage of civilians across the country's borders. An ever complicated political situation and a growing list of paperwork to check mean the game's difficulty is gradual but also punish
Don't Starve originally came out on PC and created a solid fan-base for itself by being a really fun survival/crafting game with a humorous gothic-lite style. It kept interest up by being constantly updated with new features and plenty of secrets, growing from its initial impressive size to a huge epic of carving out a life in a hostile land, if only you can manage to avoid the many endless ways death can cut the adventure short. There's lands to explore, a giant network of caves underground, www.housekibako.Info monsters of all shapes and sizes, tons of resources if only you can figure out how to both collect use them best, and, if you can find it, an Adventure mode to provide a bit of plot to counterbalance the free-form Survival mode. Don't Starve is loaded with content, but it requires a motivated player to get to it.
Although some may find the text-based graphical style a little awkward, the title’s addictive gameplay has given Dwarf Fortress a cult following. The game’s defining feature, however, is its brutal difficulty; whether choosing Fortress Mode or Adventure Mode, the player will eventually succumb to the goblin hordes, leaving their fortress in tatt
And then you get cocky and decide to attack the wrong monster. Or an unexpected swarm of bats invades the camp, or a surprise tentacle in the swamp, or maybe you weren't quite so prepared for winter as you thought you were. Death isn't truly inevitable, but it's going to take a whole lot of dying to learn how not to do it any more. Then it's time to choose who you want to play as this time, roll up a new world, and start all over again with, hopefully, a better plan.
